Love Yourself
The seventh thing you can do to stop being a people pleaser is to love people the way you love yourself since Jesus commanded us to Love your neighbor as you love yourself. (Matthew 22:39)
As a people pleaser you will find that you tend to love the people around you more than you love yourself. For example that you may find that you always go out of your way to bake delicious cakes for your friendsâ birthdays but never even bake yourself a cookie for your birthday. Therefore, heed this great commandment and begin loving your neighbor just as much as you love yourself and not less.
To do this you may first have to stop being nice or loving to others when you are not nice or loving to yourself so that you can begin being nice and loving to yourself.
For starters, follow the Bibleâs definition of love and apply it to yourself for it is written, âLove is patient, kind, and does not envy.â (1 Corinthians 13:4) So begin being patient with yourself as you shower yourself with loving-kindness by engaging in activities that you enjoy each day. For example, you can drink a cup of your favorite herbal tea, wear the clothes you love or simply spend 15 minutes engaging in a hobby you enjoy.
As you spend your resources loving on yourself each day, you will find that you will begin to value yourself and love yourself. This new found self love will then strengthen your resolve to stand up for yourself when the disease to please tries to turn you into a doormat.
Then, after you have developed the habit of spending your time, money and other resources doing pleasant things for yourself, you can now resume spending your resources on pleasing others because now you will be better able to Love your neighbor just as much as you love yourself (Matthew 22:39) and consequently you will be able to avoid doing detrimental things to please others.
